Tests are the better way of documentation - we do all write tests, don't we?

I also heard similar arguments. I personally think that RDoc, while not being *essential*, is a really useful tool that we should all use to our advantage... since it is so easy anyway. 

Even if you're not going opensource, I think it helps keeping good practices regarding comments.
